Songkran in Southern Phuket

Songkran in Southern Phuket

Will you be celebrating the Thai New Year festivities, known as Songkran, in southern Phuket? The neighborhood certainly is diverse and full of activities, and offers a lot of options for celebrating the wet, wild and oh so fun Thai New Year.

Celebrate Songkran on the Beach

The southernmost tip of Phuket is a really fun place to explore during Songkran. The heart of the action south of Chalong Circle is the Rawai neighborhood, specifically Rawai Beach Road. Although not ideal for swimming, Rawai Beach is a lovely stretch of long tail boats, fresh seafood restaurants and a variety of pubs & bars. It’s a sleepy fishing village, but during the Thai New Year celebrations the area really comes alive.

At the corner of Rawai Beach Road, there is an open air restaurant called Nikita’s. A favorite of locals and expats alike, the venue is a wonderful place to have a bite to eat while watching Songkran get underway. Throughout the day, this corner becomes rather busy as those enjoying the festival wander on foot, ride slowly on motorbikes or observe from the safety of their vehicles as everyone throws water from gallon buckets set out in front of the local businesses that line the road.

Breaking News:- The Thai Cabinet has approved April 12 as an additional holiday this year, bringing the total number of Songkran holidays for 2019 to five: from April 12-16.

Nai Harn Beach a favourite for Songkran

The long stretch of Nai Harn Beach in southern Phuket is another favorite place amongst locals for celebrating Songkran. The shaded area just behind the beach generally holds a Songkran Festival which is essentially a market with a variety of souvenirs and food items. Each night, there is entertainment in the form of live concerts and karaoke, as well as a Songkran beauty pageant. The little market area is loads of fun, and gives a real insight into how locals like to ring in the Thai New Year.

Keep in mind that no matter where you choose to celebrate Songkran in southern Phuket, you are going to get wet. The water fight is the biggest part of the fun during the Thai New Year celebrations, so do prepare accordingly. Make sure to enclose your mobile phone in a plastic bag, and if possible, carry a waterproof bag for the rest of your belongings.
